The chief Mark Rutte (Nothing) wants to give Donald Trump what he wants – higher defense spending on America’s allies

Growth nations are likely to be “pre-cooked”, less to show a united front.

Secretary General Mark Rutte has already made the menu for their Haggue meeting: One to avoid a row with the most powerful member of Naat, the US.

A commitment to the addition of defense European defense is the dish of President Donald Trump – and that’s exactly what he gets. Although the additional components of compromise and folge are inevitable.

Neither the summit can make the paper on the cracks between Trump and many of his European allies in trade, Russia and the growing conflict in the Middle East.

The US president, whose mantra is America first, not a large fan of multinational organizations.

He is very critical to NATO – even questioning its foundation in collective defense. During Trump’s first term, his first NATO Summit, he underlined European allies without spending enough and debt to the US “large amounts of money”.

In that message he is most consistent.

European countries have raised defense spending – in part because of Trump, in part because of Putin

Mark Rutte, with a good relationship with the US president, worked hard to give him a win.

The summit took place at the World Forum in two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Today the main discussions last three hours and the Summit statement is lowered by five paragraphs, reported for the demands of the US President.

Trump is one of 32 leaders from the Western Defense Alliance to come, with heads of more than a dozen associated countries.

Dutch police put their greatest security operations for the most expensive NATO summit so far, at the sum of € 183.4m (£ 155ms).

Others suggest to the summit of the summit of the United States presidential attention and unwilling to long meetings. But a short summit with fewer topics mentioned is, more importantly, help hide divisions.

Ed Arnold, in defense thought Tank Rusi, Trump said to be the star of the show and predicted that he was able to claim that he was forcing European countries to act.

Indeed he is not the first US president to criticize the expenditure of the defense of allies’. But he has more success than most. Kurt Bocker, a former US ambassador in NATO, claims that some European governments do not want the alyes to spend 5% of their GDP in defense.

Since his first term office, Donald Trump often requests NATO alloys pay their defense

Europe still accounts for 30% of the general military spending in the NOAT. Voler said many Europeans claimed they “we had to do it, even if it wasn’t good to be a pants kick”.

Some European countries run their defense spending 5% of their GDP. Most countries live in almost Russia – such as Poland, Estonia and Lithuania.

It’s not just Trump that pressure pressure. Promotion of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine is forcing the answer.

But honestly many Members of NATO will struggle to answer the new target. Some did not meet the objective of 2%, set for more than a decade ago.

Rutte’s compromise form for allies to increase their core defense to spend GDP, with additional 1.5% of defense expenditure related to defense.

But the definition of defense-related expenditure appears unclear to make it meaningless. Rutte says can include the infrastructure industry cost – build bridges, roads and rails. Ed Arnold, in Rusi, says it is inevitable to bring more “creative accounting”.

Although, as expected, the new expenditure target is approved, some countries may have a small intention to reach it – by 2032 or 2035. The timen-and timencale is not yet clear. The Prime Minister of Spanish chief calls it unreasonable and counter-productive. Sir Keir Starmer has never said when UK is spent 3% of the GDP of its defense. The Prime Minister of the UK says this is an ambition a few hours in the next parliament. However, the UK government policy has been given to NATO placement in the UK defense center, Sir Keir should return the new plan.

True disaster is to interpret the need for an increase in defensive expenditure as an arbitrary, a gesture symbol – or bending pressure. It also moved its own NOAT defense plan on how to respond to a Russian attack. Rutte himself says that Russia can attack a NATO country for five years.

Russian forces are still driving Ukraine – and there are fears that it can invade other European states

Defense plans remain secrecy. But Rutte has already placed what alliance lacks. In a language early this month he said that NATO requires a 400% rise in air and missile defenses and tanks, and millions of artillery shells.

Most member states, including the UK, have not reached their capacity in NATO’s ability. So Sweden planned to double the size of the soldiers and Germany seeks to develop its troop numbers at 60,000.

Plans go to granular detail how to induce the alley of the east of Russia’s east attack. In a new language, the US army leader in Europe, General Christopher Donahue, emphasized the need for defense of Polish and Lithuanian territory near the Russian Enclave in Kaliningrad. He said the Alliance looked at the existing capabilities and “knowingly they are not enough”.

However, strange, the specific discussions about Russia and the War in Ukraine are gem. This is a big issue currently dividing Europe and America. Kurt Boyer says, under Trump, the US “did not see Ukrainian security that is important in European security but our European allies do”.

Trump has broken the united front of NATO by talking to Putin and preventing military support in Ukraine.

Ed Arnold says disputes issued from the summit. A schism with a trump is less likely to avoid. Leaders should discuss a new Russian strategy, but it’s not on the agenda.

Ukrainian president Voltodmyr Zelensky was invited to the summit dinner, but he did not participate in the main discussions of the North Atlantic Council.

Rutte expects his first summit as secretly as short and sweet. But for the factors of most of his allies in Russia, the greatest threat facing Alliance, no guarantee to go according to the plan.
