At least 12 people have died and nearly 50 are still missing after a landslide hit two boats in the Amazon Rainforest Rivilest Regforest Rivilest Rivilest Rivilesest
The landslide fell into a shadow and seriously damaged another passenger ship with many people on board, according to a police report cited by the Adina News Agency.
It happened at around 05:00 local time (10:00 GMT) as the passengers were scheduled to board in Iparia, in the central Ucayali region of the country on Monday.
The injured were taken to hospital while the National Police and the Peruvian Navy searched for more survivors. It is feared that the children are among the lost.
The landslide caused the “deterioration” of the bank of the UCAYali River – the head of the Amazon – the country National Emergency Operations Center x said.
About 50 people were on board one of the boats, according to News Agency AFP.
Rescue operations are being hampered by fast-fasting river waters, a Navy official told AFP.
Children, teachers and doctors were among the passengers, Reuters News Agency reported, citing Citing Andina.
Authorities are working with families gathered at the scene of the disaster to try to determine how many more need to be found.
One of the boats left Pucallpa in the north on Sunday and was traveling to the communities of Caco Macaya, and Pueblo Del Caco, local media reports.
